Our Mission

Our task this year was to design a series of home appliances powered by artificial intelligence. These appliances are meant to make use not only of AI that is available today, but also AI that will be developed in the coming years. Since this body of work will continue to grow, we were asked to create appliances that clearly demonstrate how AI will change the lives of everyday people for the better.

Together, after extensive user research, the Stanford and USTC teams determined that the future of AI in the home is building a modular home space. We believe that through witnessing and AI system that creates a physical space to serve their individual needs, people will develop a better understanding of the breadth of benefits that AI will someday provide for them.

We then diverged into two products, that together form one home system. The Stanford team created SHIFT, an autonomous system of small robots that reorder furniture to create new living spaces within a home of limited size. Meanwhile, the USTC team made a smart screen that follows a user around the home and automatically adjusts to maintain a comfortable position. Click on the images above to learn more about each of the two projects!
